What To Serve With Meatballs? 30 Best Side Dishes

Having an idea of what to serve with meatballs will always make for a more elegant and refined dish. The great combination of a delicious side dish and a tasty main meal will make your whole dining experience 1000 times better : )

What to serve with meatballs

In this article, I’m going to run through some of the options that I love to serve with meatballs. There are many different types of meatballs, of course, so if you think one example might not work well with Italian meatballs, for example, consider how it might taste with Swedish meatballs or another option.

1. Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are, perhaps, the ultimate side dish. They’re rich, creamy, filling, and utterly simple to make. Their simplicity is one of the things that I really love about them – just boiling some potatoes and then crushing them with some cream, butter, and herbs will lead to an exciting and delicious final meal.

Try whipping your mashed potatoes for a lighter, more exciting final side.

2. Buttered Noodles

Buttered noodles are exceptionally simple – just some spaghetti noodles that have been tossed in good-quality butter. It’s so simple, in fact, that it can work wonders.

I’d suggest serving meatballs on a bed of buttered noodles. That way, as you slice and chop through the different meatballs on top of the dish, a level of tasty sauce will gather upon and throughout the noodles below. It’s a simple serving trick, but a tasty one, too!

3. Green Beans

Green beans are super amazing as far as side dishes go. To give them a boost, I’d recommend sauteing them on a very high heat in a large, wide pan. This level of blackening that might begin to occur as the green beans cook will bring a new level of flavor to the plate!

Before serving the green beans, try tossing them in lemon juice and grated parmesan cheese. It sounds like a strange combination, but it’s truly a tasty and exciting mixture of flavors that can bring a plate of food to life!

4. White Rice

Rice is a wonderful side – so tasty, and so versatile. Something that I’ve really been enjoying recently is rice which is both sweet and spicy. To my rice cooker, I’ll typically add the rice and water as I would normally, and follow that will a healthy helping of both mango jam and sriracha sauce.

The final rice is hot, sweet, and totally delightful!

5. Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Roasted brussel sprouts are a world away from the steamed or boiled ones that you might have had when you were younger. The flavor is much more refined and elegant, and you can season them to your heart’s content!

Try roasting your Brussels sprouts with lardons and roughly chopped garlic cloves. The end result will be a very well-flavored side dish.

6. Caesar Salad

Caesar salad is something that I recommend a lot on this site, but that’s because I love it so much! The sauce is a sharp and bright flavor that really boosts the leaves, chicken, and cheese, as a good dressing should.

To really boost your caesar salad, try making the dressing yourself, as that will bring a lot more flavor to the table.

7. Spaghetti Bolognese

Spaghetti bolognese is a great idea for serving with Italian meatballs – a hearty, bright, and tomato-infused meal will bring a lot of flavor to the dinner table. I always add an extra sprinkling or oregano – it’s my favorite herb!

8. Garlic Bread

Garlic bread is a world-class side dish! Not only do you get the simplicity of well-made bread that is both soft and chewy, but you also get a crispy surface at the top, along with a garlic-infused bomb of flavor. If you’re ever at a loss for a side dish in a group setting, always opt for garlic bread – everyone loves it!

9. Corn on the Cob

Corn on the cob is another wonderfully versatile and delicious side dish. It’s sweet, rich, and bright, bringing a wide variety of different flavors to any meal that is hard to ignore or turn down. I love adding a little feta cheese to my corn on the cob – I tried it once for an elote recipe, and it was soooo good! Now, it’s something I always do for corn on the cob.

10. Glazed Carrots

Glazed carrots are a heaven-sent dish! They’re typically roasted in a mixture of roasting fat and honey, which leads to crispy, sweet, and delightfully sticky carrots that bring flavor to the table in a huge way.

Try adding different ingredients to the glaze for a unique flavor – brown sugar is a wonderful ingredient!
